July, 2007

ROTARY International is an organization of business and professional men and women united worldwide who provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and help build goodwill and peace in the world.

Individual Rotarians are members of their respective Rotary Clubs. The Clubs are members of Rotary International, R.I., which is the association of all Rotary Clubs throughout the world.

Rotary was established in Chicago in 1905 when Paul Harris and a few friends gathered together to form what was to become the first Rotary Club.

Rotary International has a governing body of 19 Directors, and has officers and various Committees. The RI President currently is Wilfrid  J. (Wilf) Wilkinson, a Rotarian since 1962, a Member of the Rotary Club of Trenton, Ontario, Canada, District 7070. [Spouse: Joan]

There are two districts in the Metropolitan Taipei area, District 3480 (81 Clubs) and District 3520 (80 Clubs), for a total of 160 Clubs.  The Rotary Club of Taipei belongs to District 3480.  Our District 3480 Governor for the Rotary year 2007-2008 is Mr. C.T. Wu, Rotarian C.T., a Member of Rotary Club of Taipei Peace. [Spouse:  Rose]

Our Club – the Rotary Club of Taipei, was chartered on October 9, 1948.  We are the FIRST Rotary Club in Taiwan and the ONLY English-speaking Club in the Metropolitan Taipei area.  Currently we have 53 active members and 12 honorary members, Total: 65 Members. (Female Members: 3; Male Members: 63, consist of 20 nationalities.)

Rotaract Club

Approved by the Club, we began sponsoring Taipei Rotaract Club in 1997.  The Rotaract Club was designed to promote responsible citizenship and leadership potential in clubs of young men and women, aged 18 to 30.

Interact Club

After the success of Taipei Rotaract Club, we sponsored the Taipei American School Interact Club in 2004 for high-school youth. This provided opportunities for young people between ages 14 to 18, to work together in a world fellowship of service and international understanding.  The term “Interact” is derived from “inter,” for international, and “act,” for action.  Every Interact club must be sponsored as well as supervised by a Rotary club and must plan annual projects of service to its school, community, and the world.

The Objectives of Rotary, as provided in the Constitution of RI and of our Club, is to:

First :  The development of acquaintance as an opportunity of service.

Second :  High ethical standards in business and professions, the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations and the dignifying by each Rotarian of his occupation as an opportunity to serve society.

Third :  The application of the ideal of service by every Rotarian in his personal life, in business and in the life of the community.

Fourth :  The advancement of international understanding, good will and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional men and women united in the ideal of service.
